Road Safety Action International (RSAI) is deeply concerned about the constant obstruction and vandalization of road signs and signals in Liberia especially during political campaign activities. Road signs are an essential part of any road traffic management system. They serve several important functions, including:

  1. Providing directions to motorists
  2. warning of upcoming hazards, and
  3. regulating traffic flow.

By obstructing road signs, individuals not only compromise the smooth flow of traffic but also put the lives of road users at risk. When road signs are obstructed, it becomes harder for motorists to navigate unfamiliar roads, increasing the risk of accidents and collisions. Additionally, obstructed road signs can mislead drivers, leading to confusion and potential accidents

Furthermore, the obstruction of road signs can have a negative impact on the overall aesthetics of a community or area. It can create a cluttered and unsightly appearance, deterring visitors and locals alike. It can also damage the structural integrity of the road signs, rendering them less effective and requiring costly repairs or replacements.

RSAI firmly believes that it is the responsibility of all stakeholders, including individuals, organizations, and communities, to uphold road safety principles and promote responsible behavior on the road. This includes respecting and adhering to traffic regulations, including the placement of advertisements and promotional materials in a way that does not obstruct road signs.

RSAI urges all relevant authorities, including the Liberia National Police, local authorities, and community members, to take immediate action to address this problem. This can involve implementing stricter regulations regarding the placement and removal of advertisements, conducting regular inspections to ensure compliance with traffic laws, and working closely with community organizations to raise awareness about the importance of road safety.
